Radon Mitigation

What is Radon? Radon is a cancer-causing radioactive gas. You cannot see, smell or taste radon, but it may be a problem in your home. Radon comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water. Radon is estimated to cause about 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year and is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today. Nearly 1 in 15 homes in the US is estimated to have elevated radon levels. There are low levels of radon outdoors. Indoors, there can be high levels. Radon can enter homes and buildings through cracks in floors, walls or foundations. Radon can also be in your water, especially well water. If you smoke and your home has high radon levels, you’re high risk for developing lung cancer. Some scientific studies of radon exposure indicate that children may be more sensitive to radon. The higher the concentration of radon in your home, the greater your risk of developing lung cancer by breathing the air inside your home. How does Radon get into your home? Cracks in solid floors, cracks in walls, construction joints, gaps in suspended floors, gaps around service pipes, cavities inside walls and the water supply. Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk from Radon.

Valley Maintenance & Restoration, Inc. can test the radon levels in your home using the electronic continuous read machine which will have you results in 48 hours. Upon reviewing the results, we will discuss with you options which may include installation of a radon system in your home. Call 208-788-2789 today for more information about our radon mitigation services and a free consultation or visit www.epa.gov for further information.
